Malaysia's IHH enters Eastern Europe

IHH Healthcare, Asia's largest hospital operator by market capitalization, said Thursday that a Turkish subsidiary will invest 76 million euros ($86 million) in healthcare facilities in Bulgaria.

Istanbul-based Acibadem has signed deals with Tokushukai and its owner Torao Tokuda to wholly acquire Tokuda Hospital for 65 million euros. Separately, Acibadem also entered into a share sale agreement with City Clinic Group for a 33% stake in City Clinic for 11 million euros. The combined entities will be renamed Acibadem City Clinic and become the largest private healthcare operator in Bulgaria.

Tokuda Hospital is a 550-bed facility owned by Japan's Tokushukai, a Tokyo-based healthcare provider. Opened in 2006, the multidisciplinary hospital in the capital city of Sofia is located in a 52,000 sq. meter hub that includes clinical research facilities and a nursing home. It was the first wholly foreign-owned hospital in Bulgaria.
