Rumours that Alibaba is planning the acquisition of Ele.me, one of the major online food delivery platforms in China, have been confirmed by an insider close to the deal.

Alibaba will buy the company as a whole, while the final purchase price is still under discussion. The current valuation of the platform is about USD9.5 bn.
It is highly possible that Ele.me will act as the infrastructure for Alibaba’s new retail strategy.
