Healthcare expansion underway in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's healthcare system is dual-track, embracing both the public and private sectors. Public hospitals, which take care of about 90% of in-patient services, are the cornerstone of Hong Kong's healthcare system. They provide a safety net - and peace of mind - for all Hong Kong people, especially those with limited financial means.

The Government has earmarked HKD200 billion for a 10-year hospital development plan, including building of new public hospitals, and the expansion and redevelopment of existing public hospitals. This will increase public hospital beds by about 20%, from about 27,000 at the present to some 32,000 in 10 years.
Additional resources will be provided to the Hospital Authority to recruit and retain staff, enhance professional training, and create a better working environment in public hospitals and clinics. The engagement of retired clinicians on a part-time basis and recruitment of non-local doctors are some of the initiatives being pursued by the Hospital Authority.
