UK healthcare sector sees opportunities in India

The term “brain drain” once referred to Indian medical professionals, among others, going to the UK, but now opportunities are arising for UK healthcare providers and investors to invest in India and to share skills.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is already in the process of building eleven 1,000-bed hospitals in India using the PPP model, providing employment to more than 300,000 Indians.

MPs, peers and health professionals from the UK and India discussed other ways that ties between India and UK in healthcare area could be strengthened, at the India Healthcare Summit 2017 in London. Dr Mayank Somain, CEO, Medics Super Speciality Hospital in Lucknow, said "There are not enough hospitals in tier 2 and 3 cities and rural areas, and that is why there is a dearth of doctors there... There are so many cities that are untapped, without a single corporate hospital, especially in central and north India... It’s the next big thing that can happen to India."
