A shortage of doctors and supporting staff members has turned out to be an obstacle in the central government’s ambitious plan to improve the urban poor population’s health status. The project aims to strengthen and revamp the government’s existing primary healthcare structure.

According to the plan, there will be an urban primary health centre (UPHC) for every 50,000 persons and one community health centre (CHC) for every population of 500,000 urban poor. “So far we have established 14 UPHCs and a 30-bed CHC is underway,” chief medical and health officer Dr HN Nayak said.
Every UPHC should have one doctor, a lab-technician, pharmacist, one nurse and one auxiliary nurse midwife.
