Global medical device manufacturers have been using Mexico as a base of production in North America for decades. Companies found manufacturing medical devices include both OEMs and firms that provide service in the area of medical device subcontract manufacturing. It is less than common knowledge that Mexico is the fifth largest exporter of medical products worldwide, as well as is the second largest market for such items in Latin America. Because of its geographical proximity to the United States it is the nation’s preeminent supplier.

The first medical device products manufactured in Mexico were primarily single-use disposables. In addition to “throwaways” such as sterile sutures, latex gloves, surgical bandages and procedure trays, catheters and splints, higher tech medical devices are today routinely manufactured in Mexico. 

As fiscal realities necessitate the implementation cost reduction measures on the part of suppliers to OEMs in the medical realm, Mexico will be an increasingly attractive option for mid-sized privately owned medical device companies. When compared with nine other leading medical device manufacturing countries, Mexico offers an average of a twenty percent savings in the cost of manufacturing for medical instruments and other products.
