Malaysia, the ASEAN medical device manufacturing hub?

Malaysia is well positioned to be the hub of medical device manufacturing in ASEAN says the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA). Dato’ Azman Mahmud, CEO of MIDA, during the recent launch of a Medical Device Industry Outlook Report, said that this capability is being supported by a solid ecosystem of strong medical device supporting industries and global conformity assessment bodies that are already present in the country.

Malaysia hosts more than 190 medical devices manufacturers with investments worth RM13.2 billion. Approximately 57,872 people have benefitted from these investments through employment. Ansell, Ambu, Bard, B.Braun, Haemonetics and St. Jude Medical are among the foreign MNCs that have set up a manufacturing base in the country. Local companies such as ABio Orthopaedics, Straits Orthopaedics, Dispo-Med, Vigilenz Medical Devices, Allen Healthcare, UWC Healthcare and Top Glove have also successfully carved a name for themselves in the local and international arena.

In 2014, MIDA approved 42 projects in the medical device industry with investments of RM2.2 billion and employment of 7,300. About 54% or RM1.2 billion of this investment was from domestic sources and the remainder from overseas.

The medical device industry has been identified as one of the high potential growth industries, alongside with aerospace, chemical, electrical & electronics and machinery & equipment. It is hoped that these sectors will re-energise manufacturing in Malaysia, though production of high complexity, high technology and high value added products.
