Refractive error in India results in billions of USD in lost productivity

In a developed economy, for every 7,000 people you have one optical store, whereas in India it is almost 25,000 people for one store, and that is 90% skewed towards urban areas.

Saugata Banerjee, Vice President 2.5 NVG - ‎Essilor, shares how their business model is determined to reduce the burden of uncorrected refracted vision in India. 

If you look at India, there are about 550 million people who have uncorrected refractive error. In terms of the economic impact, it translates to about a 2 lakh crore (USD31 bn) loss of productivity every year in terms of GDP. So, it’s a huge burden for the country which could be easily taken care of by just providing them with a pair of spectacles.
