Myanmar introduces drug tenders for public hospitals

Myanmar's public hospitals are now additionally permitted to procure pharmaceutical treatments through a tender system, replacing the previous ration system. In 2014, the volume of available drugs at public hospitals was also 35 times higher than in 2011, with Myanmar's health ministry allocating MMK77.7 billion (USD60.4 million) to the purchase of medicines.

The tender system is expected to bring about increased efficiencies at public hospitals at all levels, and reduce the surpluses and shortages of medicines that have built up under the former rationing system.

This development, together with Myanmar's rising healthcare budget, reflects growing patient demand for pharmaceuticals, and potentially, opportunities for multinational pharma.
