Mobile payment has become more popular in China's rural areas as Internet technology has made transactions faster and more convenient in remote places where banks and ATMs are not easily accessible.

Transactions through non-banking mobile payment services totaled RMB43 tn (USD6.8 tn) in rural areas in 2017, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said.
"Mobile payment is dominant [in the rural market]," said the PBOC, as it took the lion's share of the RMB45 tn web-based non-banking transactions in the countryside.
