Malaysia's medtech industry to generate USD2.7 bn

Malaysia’s healthcare industry is expected to generate nearly MYR13 bn (USD3.2 bn) in revenue this year, said Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam.

He said the medical devices sector, which is a key segment of the industry, was expected to contribute MYR11 bn (USD2.7 bn) in exports, with revenue from the health tourism and pharmaceutical sectors expected to reach MYR1 bn (USD248 mn) and MYR800 mn (USD199 mn) respectively.
Overall, he said, the healthcare industry was expected to contribute RM35 billion to Gross National Income (GNI) and create 180,000 jobs by 2020. "For the medical devices sector, Malaysia is the largest surgical gloves manufacturer in the world and we also manufacture beds, dental chairs and orthopaedic implants."
