Doctors at the National Center for Global Health & Medicine in Tokyo have launched the world’s first large-scale clinical study to examine whether using the Internet of Things is effective in keeping high blood-sugar levels at bay.

The researchers have recruited 2,000 Type 2 diabetes patients who are a step short of receiving dialysis and divided them into two groups: one with a smartphone app and Internet-connected medical devices, and the other without.

In a previous study conducted by the Aichi institute and covering nearly 200 people, users of the app were shown to be more successful in lowering their blood-sugar levels than non-users.
