Customised knee replacement implants now available in Singapore

Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has become the first in Southeast Asia to fit patients with customised total knee replacement implants, which are moulded based on the unique size and shape of each patient's knee. The hospital said such customisation can deliver better care and comfort to patients compared to generic implants.

The first surgeries using this technology took place in October 2014 and it comes amid a rising number of patients undergoing total knee replacement.

At TTSH, about 600 patients underwent total knee replacement surgery in 2013, with the majority being senior citizens, as well as those who injured their knees due to sports. Based on past records, the hospital estimates that there is typically about a 10 per cent increase each year in patients needing this surgery.
