Hundreds of Australians implanted with a defective hip device will be eligible for a share of $250 million in compensation following the conditional settlement of a long-running class action.

The action was started five years ago, after a worldwide recall of the DePuy ASR device in 2010, and sparked thousands of compensation claims.

The device was designed, manufactured and marketed by DePuy International, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, the world's largest medical devices company.

Nearly 100,000 patients around the world were implanted with the device — 5,500 of whom were in Australia.
