Japan's eyewear prices rise as country's vision fails

Eyewear prices are rising in Japan as low-end retailers boost lineups of pricier products and high-end retailers offer ritzier services.

For the fiscal year through August 2016, the average price of glasses hit an all-time high of 7,400 yen (USD68), up 19% from 2014. Yasunori Kitagaito, manager of retailer Jins' design group, said a growing number of customers in their 40s and 50s are buying bifocals and other high value-added lenses, pushing up prices.
