Japan's medical instrument and equipment makers are stepping up efforts in the Middle East, a region where their presence has been small but in which they see significant growth potential.

Fujifilm will deliver over 200 units of its X-ray system to public hospitals in Saudi Arabia by the end of this month, while Olympus is planning to begin sales at its new regional headquarters in Dubai in April.

Japanese companies see the medical equipment markets of the Middle East, though small at present, as having great potential as populations grow alongside rising income levels. The market is expected to increase by about 10% annually.

Saudi Arabia's medical equipment market is estimated at about JPY200 bn (USD1.8 bn), while in the United Arab Emirates it stands at about half that level.
