SHK govt increases budget allocation for healthcare

With ageing population seen as a formidable challenge, Hong Kong will continue to increase resources on healthcare. In the 2015-2016 budget, allocation to the Hospital Authority (HA) will reach $49 billion, up nearly 50 percent.

In a speech delivered to the Legislative Council, Financial Secretary John Tsang said the growth of the elderly population will push up demands for healthcare and elderly services, thus increasing public expenditure.

He said the government will carry out more more hospital projects to provide additional 2,000 beds, with estimated expenditure to reach $81 billion.

Some of these projects include the development of an acute general hospital in the Kai Tak Development Area (Phase 1), Tin Shui Wai Hospital and Hong Kong Children's Hospital; the redevelopment of Kwong Wah Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital; and the expansion of United Christian Hospital.
