An over-reliance on Chinese e-commerce platforms to sell New Zealand products means marketers are quickly losing their local knowledge and risking their future in the world's biggest market.

New Zealand's budding love affair with Alibaba, the retail giant with hundreds of millions of customers across China, is a key example of this.

"China is changing so quickly that if we aren’t actually in the market we will struggle to understand the trends driving changing consumer needs."
