Vaccine prices increase in Vietnam

The prices of vaccines in Vietnam have recently surged by five to ten percent due to scarcity and foreign manufacturers hiking their quotes, according to the Hanoi Preventive Medicine Center.

Nguyen Nhat Cam, director of the center, said he knows at least six kinds of vaccine get their prices increased recently.

A survey at other hospitals where vaccines have been sold as optional services, not belonging to the national inoculation program, showed that there have been hikes in the prices of around ten kinds of vaccine.

The price of a dose of vaccine against typhoid has gone up from VND135,000 (US$6) to VND185,000 ($8.2). That of the 5-in-1 vaccine (against five diseases, including the inflammation of the membrane of the throat, coughing, tetanus, the inflammation of the liver, and the inflammation of the brain membrane) has surged to VND710,000 ($32) from VND630,000 ($28).

Other vaccines that have their prices hiked include those against meningitis (the inflammation of the brain membrane), rabies, and chickenpox.
