US delay in targeting Chinese patients

A year ago local politicians and planners were excited by plans to turn an unused shoe factory in Auburn into a medical tourism centre for Chinese patients. Progress so far is slow; the targeted 2017 opening will not be met.

Chinese investment company Miracle Enterprise plan a 200-room recovery centre that will cater to wealthy Chinese tourists seeking medical care. Medical tourists can stay at the centre while getting treatment at Central Maine Medical Centre for cancer and diabetes. 

Miracle Enterprise needs to find $40 million, but is struggling to attract investors in China. The investors expect Auburn to pay the substantial sums for the infrastructure and they need to get funding at the state and federal level.
