The beautiful island - medical tourism in Taiwan

For the past several years, Taiwan has been steadily developing its medical tourism offering, starting with the Taiwan Medical Tourism Development Association.

A coalition of 67 organisations made up of travel companies and medical centres have come together to offer their services to travellers seeking medical treatment. These packages tend to be expensive and aimed at high-end tourists from China.

There are a significant number of hospitals in the country that offer services to medical tourists. The Taiwan Medical Travel website lists 53 medical centres, regional hospitals and professional clinics that offer medical services to international patients. The Ministry of Health and Welfare reported that over 230,000 visitors arrived in Taiwan for medical care in 2013.

Perhaps by targeting Chinese patients specifically, Taiwan’s efforts could be more directed than many others and thus potentially more successful.
