Taiwan well-poised for healthcare in IoT: Google

Taiwan is well-poised to develop Web-based smart factories and smart healthcare services in the long term thanks to its strong presence in the global hardware supply chain, an executive of Google's Taiwan unit said on Wednesday.

Google Taiwan managing director Chien Lee-feng said that Taiwan's government is driving an initiative similar to the fourth industrial revolution, dubbed "Industry 4.0," to upgrade its manufacturing sector as part of its efforts to move into the booming Internet of Things (IoT) market–the concept of connecting ordinary household devices to the Internet.

A strength in Taiwan's IoT drive is the country's excellent medical and health insurance systems, which have paved the groundwork for Taiwan to move into smart medical services that also require further integration with hardware devices, according to the Google executive.

He suggested that Taiwan should export its smart medical services to other Chinese-language markets such as China, where many hospitals have been established through the help of Taiwanese partners.
