Opportunities for healthcare with 150m more over-40s in China's cities by 2024

Most people doing business with China are well aware that it has an ageing population. This, of course, is predicated by the one child policy which has been in force for quite some considerable time. It also reflects the global norms of a better educated and more affluent population having a lower propensity to have children.

In 2014 it is estimated that 47% of the urban population of China is over the age of 40 increasing to 53% by 2024. Given marrying age is typically 25 to 27 years this also means that 63% household decision makers are over the age of 40. So already the bias of the urban consumer market is towards older consumers.

However, as a result of the bias in age profile of rural to urban migrants over the last 10 years, very significant changes will occur in the relative size of the key consumer ‘life stage age’ segments in the next decade.
