Many medical tourism visitors to India seeking orthopaedic services

The Directorate-General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics of India recently released a report showing the latest statistics for medical visas and treatment of international patients in India. The figures for medical visas cover patients travelling to India from other countries for healthcare.

According to the report, between 2015 and 2016, Indian hospitals admitted 460,000 international patients, with the total medical visa figures reaching less than half of that number. One in three foreign patients (165,000) were from Bangladesh, with only 58,300 of these found to be genuine medical travellers.

The other top countries for medical travellers were Afghanistan (29,492 patients), Iraq (9,131), Nigeria (5,994), Kenya (3,240) and Pakistan (1,921). The top reasons listed by the report for patients travelling to India were orthopaedics, cardiology and neurology.
