Malaysia's medical tourism set to achieve USD290 mn

The medical tourism industry in Malaysia is expected to achieve its target revenue of MYR1.3 bn (USD290 mn) in 2017, said the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC).

MHTC's chief executive officer Sherene Azli said the industry is experiencing a growth of 30 per cent year-on-year. "Malaysia has the ecosystem and infrastructure to provide quality end-to-end healthcare system and services that are globally competitive," she said.

On average, medical travellers' contributions to the economy are double that of the regular tourists. MHTC estimated that one million visitors would flock to Malaysia in 2017, contributing up to MYR5 bn (USD1.1 bn) to the GDP.

Private hospitals nationwide currently have 15,000 beds, with the top treatments sought by medical travellers including cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, IVF, dental and cosmetic surgery.
