Indian orthopedic surgeons take initiative to indigenize knee implants

Knee surgeons from different parts of the country attending the Arthroplasty Arthroscopy Summit 2016, hosted by Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad, discussed the need for documenting Indian knee sizes and methods to "Make in India" for knee implants.

Leading knee surgeons from across the country highlighted the problem that is frequently plaguing knee replacement surgeries in India. Most of the knee implants used for surgery are imported and are based on the sizes of American and European patients. These implants are a misfit for Indian patients and don't facilitate their regular activities like squatting for pooja or kneeling for namaaz. 

The think tank deliberated on the problems and have embarked on a one year project for size standardization and identifying methods for producing high quality affordable implants, as part of the "Made in India" initiative. The number of centres will be expanded and more centers added to participate in the study, including the government hospitals which have high load of patients and can give valuable inputs.
