Online shopping and ride-hailing apps have quickly gained currency in Indonesia as consumers have embraced smartphones. Of the country's population of 260 million people, more than half are 30 or younger.

"Indonesia is the last remaining large market where technology hasn't really taken off," said John Riady, the executive director in charge of Lippo's digital segment, in a recent interview.
